Sony a annoncé au salon de l'IBC les nouvelles introductions à sa désormais célèbre gamme de produit XDCAM HD422. Les nouveaux produits incluent notamment un caméscope à enregistrement sur carte mémoire XDCAM HD422, le PMW-500 qui semble être une convergence entre des spécificités de caméras des gammes XDCAM-HD 422 et XDCAM-EX, avec à l'arrivée le codec MPEG-2 HD 422 50Mb/s non plus sur Professional Disc mais sur cartes mémoires SxS. Grâce au PMW-500, l'excellente qualité d'image du PDW-700 et la flexibilité opérationnelle de l'enregistrement dématérialisé sur SxS se retrouvent pour la première fois associées dans un même système. Le PMW-500 intègre trois capteurs CCD Power HAD FX de 2/3 de pouce et propose un enregistrement HD 1080 et 720 à 50 Mo/s, ce qui fait de lui le produit idéal pour diffuseurs, loueurs et vidéastes indépendants à la recherche d'un caméscope dématérialisé polyvalent.

Le PMW-500 est doté de deux slots pour l'enregistrement sur carte mémoire SxS*. Introduite à la gamme de produits XDCAM EX en 2007, la carte mémoire SxS constitue un support extrêmement fiable permettant un accès rapide aux données. Durant l'IBC, Sony introduira également une nouvelle carte haute capacité de 64 Go (SBS-64G1A) permettant l'enregistrement de 2 heures de contenu en MXF HD422 50 Mbps. La sortie d'usine du PMW-500 est prévue dans le courant du mois d'octobre 2010.

Paul Osborne is an award-winning filmmaker who has produced and directed over 700 corporate programmes during the past 25 years.

The PMW-500 was officially launched at IBC 2010, but I was lucky enough to get my hands on one for a short time a few weeks before the event.

Key features are a 2/3 inch CCD sensor with XDCAM HD 4:2:2 recording at up to 50 megabits a second onto solid state memory in one of two SxS slots. The latter point is most interesting to me both as a freelancer and as an owner of a production company.

Those of you familiar with the PDW-700 and PDW-F800, which both use optical Professional Disc media, will see some close similarities to the PDW-500. It fills a gap in Sony’s XDCAM range offering an alternative, solid state media choice if you are considering XDCAM at the highest of recording data-rates.

As a freelancer/cameraman the PMW-500 ticks all the boxes. The quality of imagery broadens the versatility of your material, the compatibility of the robust SxS cards, a media and workflow that many of us are really comfortable with, 4 hours of recording on board at HD422, and finally the ability to hot swap the cards for continuous recording. There are also some nice added features, and tools that will make a difference out in the field.

As a production company owner, or indeed as a broadcaster, I can see the choice now offered: you have option of the top end feature set of the PDW-700 with Professional optical disc, or this PMW-500 with SxS cards.

The handling of this camera is as expected from Sony and familiar to most of us. Sony clearly have been listening as there are a few tweaks that must be the result of talking to us. The functions are very similar to those of you who have used the PDW-700 or maybe the PMW-350. The PMW-500 is the same size as the 700, but just under a kilogramme lighter. It also has improved power consumption, around 33W, 10 watts less than the 700, giving you almost three hours of operation from a BPL80. Having been used to the frugal consumption of the EX1 and EX3, I don’t really want to have to compromise on the way I work (if shooting on a full size camera), so having the 500’s power efficiency is helpful.

Viewfinders are something dear to most cameramen and this will ship with a choice of viewfinders. I have an excellent monochrome one from Sony's impressive range. Many of you will have seen other viewfinders on other camcorders, such as the PMW-350 and EX3, and this camcorder has connectors for both the established and newest viewfinders from the range.
